The 2014 Willis E. Lamb Award for Laser Science and Quantum Optics

Shi-Yao Zhu, Beijing Computational Science Research Center

For pioneering work ranging from lasing without inversion to quenched spontaneous emission.

Prof. Shiyao Zhu received his M. S. degree in optical physics from the Shanxi University in 1981 and his Ph.D. in solid state physics from Shanghai Jiao Tong University in 1986. He served as a faculty member at the Shanghai Jiao Tong University before joining the quantum optics groups at the University of New Mexico and Texas A&M University in 1988. In 1993, he accepted a faculty position at the Hong Kong Baptist University. In 2010 he joined the Beijing Computational Science Research Center where he is a Professor of Physics and the Group Leader in Quantum Optics.

Prof. Zhu’s research interests focus on quantum interference, quantum noise reduction, the interaction between materials and radiation, including meta-materials and photonic bandgap materials. He made several pioneering contributions in the study of spontaneous noise quenching and lasing without inversion. He is the author of two books and over 240 publications in scientific journals.

Prof. Zhu is a Fellow of the American Physical Society, the Optical Society of America, and the Institute of Physics (British). He was selected as the Professor of China “Recruitment Program of Global Experts” in 2010. Prof. Zhu has also received the Chinese National Award for Natural Sciences in 1999 given by the Central Government of China and several awards for outstanding scientific research work by the government of Shanxi, and the Khwarizmi International Award in 2004 by Iranian Government.
