The 2002 Willis E. Lamb Award for Laser Science and Quantum Optics

Jonathan Dowling, NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory

For pioneering contributions to quantum electronics and especially the study of spatial coherence effects of multiphoton entangled states.

Jonathan P. Dowling is Horace C. Hearne Jr. Professor of Theoretical Physics and Co-Director the Hearne Institute for Theoretical Physics, Department of Physics and Astronomy, Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Prof. Dowling received his BS in physics (with honors) from the University of Texas at Austin. He then received his MS in Applied Mathematics, MS in Physics, and PhD in Mathematical Physics, all from the University of Colorado at Boulder.

He was a Visiting Research Scientist at the International Center for Theoretical Physics in Trieste, Italy; a Postdoctoral Research Scientist at the Max Planck Institute for Quantum Optics in Garching, Germany; and a National Research Council postdoctoral research associate in the Optical Sciences group at Army Aviation and Missile Command (AMCOM), Redstone Arsenal, Alabama. He then joined AMCOM as a Research Physicist, also in the Optical Sciences Group, where he won the Army Research, Development, and Achievement Award for his development of the theory of spontaneous emission in photonic crystals. He then left AMCOM to take a position as Research Scientist at the Senior Level in the Quantum Computing Technologies Group at JPL, where he was eventually promoted to Principal Scientist and Group Supervisor, before leaving to take his current post in Louisiana.

Dowling has over 100 published articles, and he holds eight US patents in the fields of nonlinear and quantum optics, primarily in photonic crystal device development, quantum imaging, and optical approaches to quantum information processing.

He serves as referee to numerous prestigious journals, is a Fellow of the Institute of Physics and the Optical Society of America, and has served on the editorial board of Physical Review and Journals of the European Optical Society.
